Why is my image so much smaller after compressing?

Most photos are saved with far more image data than the eye can actually distinguish. Lowering the quality slightly removes that extra data, often cutting file size by half or more with little visible difference.

Why does this convert my image to JPG?

JPG is the only common format where quality is freely adjustable — that adjustability is what makes real compression possible. PNG is lossless by design, so a browser can't meaningfully shrink one without changing format.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

JPG doesn't support transparency, so any transparent area becomes solid white. If you need to keep transparency, use Convert Image to export as WebP instead, which supports both transparency and adjustable quality.

Is there a file size limit?

No hard limit — very large images may just take a moment longer, since your device is doing the work.
